Leading global ingredients solutions provider Ingredion took home the top prize in clean label and natural innovation at last night’s Fi Europe Innovation Awards in Frankfurt, Germany.
The company received the special recognition for its HOMECRAFT® Create 835 and 865 multi-functional rice flours, the first-ever of their kind to be made available to the industry.
Suitable for highly demanding, clean label applications including soups, sauces and ready meals, the rice flours deliver the same level of performance as functional native rice starches while enabling a consumer-preferred ‘rice flour’ label.
With moderate-to-high process tolerance, they also deliver superior texture stability over shelf-life, improved opacity and gluten-free appeal.
HOMECRAFT® Create 835 and 865 multi-functional rice flours enable food producers to substitute ingredients such as modified starch in favour of consumer-friendly flour labels, without compromising product quality.
Hosted on the first day of biannual conference Food Ingredients Europe, the world’s largest gathering of ingredient buyers and decision-makers, the awards recognise the professionals and companies that demonstrate and inspire innovation in the food and beverage industry.
Charlotte Commarmond, Senior Director, Marketing and Innovation at Ingredion EMEA, says: “During a time when clean and natural foods have never been in greater demand, we are delighted to produce an ingredient that supports the ultimate clean label claim. Our HOMECRAFT® Create 835 and 865 multi-functional rice flours meet consumer demand for healthier products and satisfy the preference for flours and rice-based ingredients.
“Our research shows that rice is not only well-recognised by consumers as a widely used ingredient, but that it also has positive associations with being natural (55%), healthy (51%), ‘real’ food (39%) and easy to digest (36%). 78% of consumers accept rice flour in soups, sauces and ready meals. No other tested texturiser ranked higher.
“As pioneers of clean label ingredient solutions, we are thrilled to have been recognised by the industry for our innovations.”
There are four fundamental areas in which HOMECRAFT® Create 865 and HOMECRAFT® Create 835 multi-functional rice flours demonstrate innovation. Firstly, they enable manufacturers to replace fat or protein while sustaining creaminess and mouthfeel.
Secondly, they can deliver improved product quality due to their high texture stability over shelf-life and ability to prevent syneresis. Thirdly, they enable the development of gluten-free sauces with an authentic flour label and a texture and opacity similar to wheat flour.
Lastly, they can offer increased consumer appeal through the ultimate clean label ingredient, which supports a natural and premium positioning in highly demanding applications, such as soups, sauces and ready meals.
